Results of new power source and management study to be distributed at inaugural Portable Power Conference & Expo

More than 50% of notebook owners use a wireless network on a daily basis, according to a new user research report, "The Balance of Power," to be distributed at the inaugural Portable Power Conference & Expo, September 21-23, 2003 at San Francisco's Moscone Center. IDG World Expo (Framingham, Mass.) is organizing the event.

Power Strategies Inc. conducted the new study, in coordination with Alpha Beta Planning and marketQuest. The results will help device designers and strategic marketers map out power source and power management product strategies. Conference attendees will be the first to receive the latest information on the usage activities of owners of hand-held electronic organizers (PDAs) and notebook computers.

Early findings of the study indicate that:

• More than 50% of the notebook users say they are already using a wireless
network for at least one hour each day.

• Sixty-five percent of notebook users say that their notebooks operate on battery power one to three hours per day.

• Twenty-one percent of notebook users purchase an extra battery with their notebook computer. Men purchase an additional battery nearly twice as often as
women.

• More than 48% of notebook/laptop users think that the batteries powering
their most recently purchased devices are lasting longer.

The complete user research report will cover a variety of usage issues, including recharging regimes, power duty cycles, use of ancillary features, and power management circuitry.

"Until now, power conferences have had a big gap, with no user research to let device and battery designers really understand how business users and consumers are using device power sources," contends Norm Allen, president of Power Strategies Inc. and a member of Portable Power Conference & Expo's Technical Advisory Group. "With this report, we now understand more clearly the trade-offs users will make for battery run time versus other device features."

Research results will be presented exclusively during a special presentation at Portable Power Conference & Expo on Monday, September 22, 2003 at 5:30 p.m. A complimentary copy of the complete report will be distributed to attendees who register for a full event pass by September 12, 2003.
